It was a little over two weeks ago that we first received word that the was. Now with the official ROM leaking out onto the internets, we’re hoping an official launch isn’t that far off.

HTC myTouch Slide 4G Unlocked GSM Android Phone, Black, 1.2Ghz, 8MP, 4GB Internal Memory. 3.0 out of 5 stars 147. More Buying Choices $156.54 (3 used & new offers) Generic Battery BG86100 High Capacity 1850 mAh BG58100 For HTC MyTouch 4G Slide. 5.0 out of 5 stars 1.

As usual the ROM made it’s way to the XDA-Developers forum as Android 2.3.3. One noticeable difference is the addition of the Quick Settings tab found in the pull-down notification screen. Letting you turn on and off the myTouch 4G’s Wi-Fi, GPS, bluetooth, cell network and hotspot feature without the need for a dedicated widget. Otherwise, as you’ll see in the video courtesy of Phil from AndroidCentral who was kind enough to videotape Gingerbread in action that the device looks and feels the same as it did before. Feedback from the leaked ROM is mixed with some users reporting some mild issues with Wi-Fi and overall stability. Of course others are porting no trouble and would recommend firing it up on your own myTouch 4G, if you’re into leaked ROM’s and all.

As with all leaked ROM’s, installation is done at your own risk! Besides the notification settings change are we suppose to see anything new in terms of eye candy or speed or anything cause to be honest i havent rooted my mytouch 4g simply because rooting has no purpose, with the mytouch 4g you can wifi tether, the phone is fast enough no need for overcloking and if i want to change the looks you simply can swap from spb 3d, go launcher ex, launcher pro, adw launcher, netfront launcher.

In other words if thats the only change noticeable then by all means the onlything that is useful is the gtalk video thing that was released a couple of days ago. Anyone has a reason to root and not stay stock and wait for OTA? Ive seen videos of MT4g rooted using CM7 theres simply nothing worth and alot of eye candy to lose, some people claim battery life is enhanced to be honest by switching settings and little to no use I’ve manage to pull 15 to 18 hours of battery life and medium to light use I pull 10 hours and heavy use well that one depends if your playing but 5 or 6 hours. Is not the best but i dont think root will increase that in any way at least I havent seen proof yet. I’d say a good reason to root the MT4G is to get rid of all the garbage bloatware that constantly runs in the background (e.g., all the Yahoo stuff, Qik, etc.). I’m just under 6 months from my warranty being toast so I’ll probably root mine in 3 months.

That being said, my Nexus One showed up in the mail only 2 days after it was released and I had that thing rooted and unlocked (bootloader) within the month. I have to admit that it is fun sometimes jumping around the different ROMs. I think, however, that there are probably more ROMs available for the Nexus One than for the MT4G.

I should probably look into what’s available for the MT4G (Sense-wise). Stock Android is okay, but I prefer HTC’s Sense and its scrollable widgets). Before anyone rips my head off, I know, Launcher Pro Plus is a pretty good substitute.

It doesn’t have HTC’s dialer or weather widget, both of which I use often. Just my 2 cents. This update can’t come fast enough.

Very much looking forward to the official OTA. To be honest, lets say you take out the bloatware which i would like to do too but, that bloatware doesnt slow my phone in any way besides they are idle in the background which means they are not draining my battery its true they use some battery thats obvious but saying that taking them out will improve the performance sky high is just lying to yourself. @Scott B I must say that maybe you hate the bloatware but i do use some of it, amazon mp3 is just great, the widget is simple, the cloud is awesome, qik is another app that i find super usefull i take videos of whatever i think its epic and they are almost instantly uploaded to qik account how more epic can that be. Most of the time am on wifi but thats the crappy TMOBILES network fault. (I HATE TMOBILE MORE TODAY THAN YESTERDAY AND TOMMOROW I WILL HATE THEM x100000 times MORE) In other words useful bloatware for me are: 1.htc sense widgets (epicness of the epic) 2.amazon mp3 3.qik 4.quickoffice 5.screenshare what i consider bloatware would be 1.all yahoo apps (mail, messenger) 2.faves 3.asphalt 4.demo videos 5.highlight 6.monopoly classic 7.tmobile mall 8.stocks (yeah its a sense widget but it sucks badly) 9.news (same as above) 10.tmobile tv 11.fm radio theres people who hate them all and prefer a stock build which in my personal opinnion is HORRIBLE.

IOS has a nice eye candy which is part of the experience and some people simply don’t see or don’t like. If i ever root my phone i guarantee that i wont stay with stock horrible looks ill take something like MIUI and in the worst case something derived from sense itself, and in the WORST WORST case ill take go launcher ex and apply a theme and install colorize widget which are by far the best widget replacements for sense Sense Colorize Widget Launcher pro plus widgets. Gingerbread is supposed to bring a lot of speed/stability enhancements to the table but don’t expect it to be drastically different. It is mostly a “developers” release, most changes are “under the hood” As far as CM7 some people just like/used to stock Android (ala G1).

I couldn’t stand Espresso so I flashed CM and never looked back. I also like the fact that I can easily get 20+ hours on 1 battery charge and not worry about turning my screen brightness down, turning off gps or messing with any 3rd party add-ons (such as juice defender, etc). In the end, it all comes down to personal preference. Android has come such a long way that it makes less and less sense to root as most options are available in stock builds or through replacement launchers.

As always, this is just my opinion and YMMV. Gingerbread is supposed to bring a lot of speed/stability enhancements to the table but don’t expect it to be drastically different. Mytouch

I have four MyTouch 4G phones all rooted. There are HUGE advantages of rooting you are missing! 1) I’ve BEEN running Gingerbread, which is faster, and has a much better keyboard. I’m on 2.3.4 while the “official” is still 2.2.1. That alone is HUGE. 2) The MyTouch 4G stock messaging apps sends pictures as slides, which is really annoying.

I prefer the Google version which sends normally. 3) I hate all the dumb games and T-Mobile apps on the stock phone that I can’t uninstall and take up memory. 4) With a rooted phone, I can move almost ALL apps to the SD card.

5) By removing everything I DON’T want, I absolutely get battery battery life, AND a snapier phone. All in all, SO worth it.
