★★★★★☆ Though at first an unlike matching, it's obvious from listening that these cats enjoyed the sessions. The duo guitar picking album may have been a trip away for Knopfler this was home field to Atkins. Throughout the 60's and 70's he had done very alike albums with various pickers including Jerry Reed and Les Paul but the 1974 Chet Atkins - Merle Travis album is so close it even suggest that it has been an direct inspiration for the Atkins-Knopler meeting.

Same kind of word-battles, blend of vintage jazz tunes and bluegrass - even 'I'll See You In My Dreams' is on both albums and sounds very alike. However, Knopler, the cross Atlantic difference and almost two decades adds a tongue in cheek cornyness and humour to this album that makes it the most contemporary and universally listenable of the line. Excellent mastering by Doug Sax. The overall feel is lively and the music traverses blues, country and one track is very classical. Listening to this CD one is taken through a musical evolution trip ( not by design, I suppose) and a fairly satisfying experience. It's not possible to name who is playing which guitar by listening unless you happen to be an expert on either artiste. In fact it most often feels there is only one person on guitar.

'Next time I'm in town' is the only song sung by Mark Knopfler and sounds very much vintage Knopfler. 'Tears' is a brilliant track, melancholic with violin coming in and the guitar work is supreme. Strongly recommended- both for its music and perhaps a tad more for its technical superiority.
